For the first Sports Review of 2023, read about the latest Mavericks games plus swimming vs HLC.

Monday 9th January

NETBALL: Mavericks A vs Sherburn Satellites

Score: Won 34-27

Player of the Match: Harriet and Jen

The first game for Mavericks A after the long festive break was a shock to the system! From the first whistle, the contest was end to end and at a very fast pace.

At half-time, the A team was leading by two goals so it was still anyone’s game. Sherburn pulled it back and at the end of the third quarter, both teams were level. It was getting very tense!

After a quick breather, both teams stepped back onto court for the last quarter. When the final whistle went, both teams were unsure which way it went.

Needless to say, Mavericks was mighty relieved and happy to have pulled off the win. What a fantastic match!

NETBALL: Mavericks B vs Selby Netball Club

Score: Lost

Player of the Match: Miss Hagan

The game started with tight defending by Miss Hagan and Kitty, winning the ball and moving quickly through the centre third with a good combination between Grace and Cora.

After Darcy scored our first goal at the end of the first quarter, we were off to a swift start in the next. With strong support around the circle by Lucy and Poppy, we managed to gain a few more great goals, with a lovely clean shot from Mia.

Going into the second half we managed some cleaner play, including a superb sideline dive by Mia in keeping the ball in play and some lovely spacing in the circle by Ilaria. Our final quarter ended with clear paths up and down the court, achieving some lovely interceptions and rebounds in the defending end.

Swimming vs HLC

Score: Lost

Player of the Match: Emilia (I) and Amanda (IV)

This week, a small team of 12 swimmers competed in our first swimming match of the year. There were some encouraging performances in an unfamiliar pool where most races were contested over 50 yards.

Special mentions to Emilia (I) and Amanda (IV) who both swam up an age group in several races, and Olivia M as captain for some outstanding swims.

Although we lost the match overall, the senior age group was exceptionally close and everyone took away some valuable lessons to apply to their training back at school.

Players of the Week

Star of the Week: Sophie M (IV), Amanda (IV), Emilia (I)

Most Improved: Louise (I)
