Curiosity Challenge: What Makes a Good Book?

This term’s Curiosity Challenge posed the thought-provoking question, "What makes a good book?" The theme resonated deeply within the QM community, inspiring a record number of high-quality entries.

Mrs Thomas was thrilled by the diverse approaches taken, which included:

  • A presentation on the structure and binding of books
  • A handmade, illustrated book exploring the qualities of a good book
  • Heartfelt essays about the emotional impact of reading
  • A creative Canva presentation on great books
  • Artwork illustrating the emotional support books can provide
  • A story told from The Book’s perspective
  • A variety of poetry, both heartfelt and factual

The creativity and effort displayed made judging an incredibly tough task. Several entries were highly commended, and the following students will receive House commendations:

  • Belle P
  • Vale FW
  • Greta W
  • Cara S
  • Jemima P

A special mention goes to Mr Grant, who continues to support the Curiosity Challenge with his own contributions. This year, he submitted a clever essay featuring Latin phrases (complete with translations), earning him a special commendation.

As for the winners, the judges found it impossible to pick just one and decided to award joint first place to two outstanding entries:

  • Olivia B (UVI): For a detailed essay exploring how different parts of the brain respond to the emotional impact of good books.
  • Bailie S (Year I): For a beautifully expressive painting illustrating how books lift our spirits during tough times, accompanied by an insightful explanation.

Congratulations to Olivia and Bailie on their well-deserved wins, and a huge thank you to everyone who participated.
