QM Riding Team Triumphs at NSEA Qualifiers

We are thrilled to announce that the QM riding team, consisting of Martha C (riding Bing), Lucinda O’G (riding Liam’s Lady), and Emily O’G (riding Willoway Talk Of The Town, aka Tommy), secured first place in the 80/85cm team event at the NSEA Qualifiers, held at Northallerton Equestrian Centre.

Despite being down to three riders due to Frances being unwell, the team delivered an outstanding performance. Lucinda placed an impressive 3rd as an individual, earning her a spot at the National Championships, while Martha finished 5th, qualifying for the Championship Plate (for riders placing 5th to 8th).

Emily was last on the course, and the team realised they only needed an averagely fast clear, so she was therefore under strict instructions not to “razz it around” and play it safe for a secure clear, giving the team the overall win!

What makes this achievement even more remarkable is that they were competing against 13 other teams and 62 individual riders—and with no drop scores between them!

We couldn’t be prouder of their accomplishment and wish them the best of luck as they prepare for the National Championship, taking place during the October half-term break.

Hockey

1sts vs The Grammar School at Leeds in 2nd Round of Independent Schools Hockey Cup
Score: 5-0 L
Players of the Match: Olivia B. (UVI), Pippa C. (UVI), Elsa S. (UVI)
On Monday afternoon, the Firsts played GSAL at home. It was a tough match, and we are gutted that the score didn’t reflect how well we played. The defence, with help from the mid, put up an excellent fight. There were a record number of short corners put up against us; however, the defence managed to stop nearly all of them. Our teamwork and determination were evident during the game, as every player showed a great attitude. We were able to implement the tactics discussed during our pre-match meeting and training this term. Despite the horrific weather that left us all drenched, it was a good game and one to be proud of.

Tennis

LTA Youth Schools Year 7 & 8 Yorkshire County Play Off Vs. Harrogate Grammar School
Score: 6 - 0 Loss
Players of the Match: Bobble P. (III) & Bronte B. (III)
We travelled away to play against Harrogate Grammar School, who booked some indoor tennis courts at David Lloyd Harrogate. The team of Bobble, Akosua E., Maddie, Bronte, and Polly played 4 singles matches and 2 doubles matches. The Harrogate number 1 player is the Yorkshire singles champion and competes in Junior ITF tournaments. Bobble maintained a super attitude throughout the match and should be very pleased with herself despite losing. Akosua, Maddie, and Bronte worked extremely hard in their singles, with some very close sets. It was great to see Polly back on the tennis court representing school. This was a great learning opportunity for our players to experience playing indoors in a competitive scenario against a difficult opposition. All of the girls should be very proud of their efforts!

Netball

QM Mavericks B v Selby Lightning
Score: Lost 29-50
Player of the Match: Grace (IV)
The first game of the new season saw Mavericks B debut new players to take on their local rivals, Selby Lightning. When these two sides met last season, it was one a piece, so a win for either team was up for grabs. Both teams started slowly, with the B team down by 8 goals at halftime. However, the B team's third-quarter syndrome kicked in, giving Selby the opportunity to steam ahead. Credit to Mavericks B; they worked hard in the last quarter to keep possession and only missed one centre pass where they didn't score. Good effort by all, especially the new B team players.

Cross Country

Cross Country Friendly Practice Race
Results: 1st overall Emily R. (IV), Eva W. (I) came 1st in her age category for QM
On Wednesday, we hosted a friendly cross-country race at QM. Several local club runners came to run and have a go at this just over 2km run. The QM runners from years I, II, III, and IV all did brilliantly and worked hard to compete. Some of these runners will now go on to run on Tuesday, 8th October, in the Cross Country Cup in Pocklington. We look forward to seeing these talented runners compete.

Hockey

U14 County Finals National League
Results: 1-0 L vs Queen Mary's, 2-0 L vs Ampleforth, 1-1 D vs St Aidan's
Players of the Match: India T. (III), Akosua E. (III), & Lucinda O. (III)
When we arrived, we played Queen Mary's, which was a very close match. We, as a team, thought we were capable of either drawing or winning. This was a very good match overall. Polly, as our captain for this match, led the team well. By the end of the game, the score was 1-0 to them, and India was rewarded as player of the match. We had a short break and discussed some tactics and goals for our next game against Ampleforth. We knew this was going to be our hardest game yet; however, we gave it our all. Lucinda saved some amazing shots, which led to her achieving the player of the match. Finally, we played St Aidan's. Our match started well, and there were many short corners that were executed accurately. As a team, we may not have won, but we were positive and encouraging and showed some great skills. The player of the match was India. Overall, the games were tough, but we played well and persevered. We can't wait for our next Hockey fixture! (The U14 Hockey squad (III))
