Saturday 7th September 2024 - Hockey Triangular vs Ampleforth & Giggleswick

1st Team

Results:

  • Lost 3-0 vs Ampleforth
  • Lost 2-1 vs Giggleswick

Players of the Tournament: Rocio (LVI) & Olivia B (UVI)

Match Report:
After a long journey to the match, carried by Elsa's tunes, the QM’s First Team Hockey squad was more than ready and raring for the first match of the season! We kicked off the day by facing Ampleforth, which was a tough match. However, we held our own against them through our determination, teamwork, and by using the tactical skills we had learned in training. Sadly, this wasn’t quite enough, and we lost 3-0.

This did not hinder our morale as we came onto the pitch ready to face Giggleswick with one aim in mind... to score a goal! Of course, our Head Girl, Miss Harriet W, pulled through with this during a tense short corner, where she hit the ball into the back of the net, letting Giggleswick know they were no challenge to us. This closed off the first half of the second match with much-improved play, though sadly a couple of injuries occurred. QM was rather tired after a long day of productive lessons, a long coach journey, and an exhausting first match, which resulted in cheeky Giggleswick slipping in a very naughty goal... and then another. Thus, we ended with a 2-1 loss.

We must highlight our players of the tournament: Olivia B, who was an important right wing and ensured many successful transitions from our deadly defense to the awesome attack; Rocio, who was an amazing addition to the team, always finding herself in the most helpful positions and playing a vital role in our goal; and Freya F, our fierce defender who stopped many attackers. Finally, Harriet W, was unstoppable on the pitch, highlighted by her goal.

U15s

Results:

  • Lost 1-0 vs Ampleforth
  • Lost 2-1 vs Giggleswick

Players of the Tournament: Evie G (IV) & Emily R (IV)

Match Report:
On Saturday 7th, Year IV set off on an away match to play two hockey matches against Ampleforth and Giggleswick. When we got there, we watched a senior match first and then played against Ampleforth. The final score was 1-0 to them, but we were all happy with our performance.

Then it was time to play Giggleswick, where the final score was 2-1 to them. We scored first and managed to keep the lead for a while. Overall, it was a good learning experience and a great way to get back into the hockey season.

U14s

Results:

  • Lost 1-0 vs Ampleforth
  • Won 2-0 vs Giggleswick

Players of the Tournament: Bobble P (III) & India T (III)

Match Report:
Ampleforth: We played really well, especially in defense, considering how strong Ampleforth is. Unluckily, they snuck one in. We did very well, given it was our first match this year.

Giggleswick: We really came together as a team. All the team contributed to the goals. We were determined to win after narrowly losing the last match. Everyone added something positive to the team.

U13A & U13B Teams

Results (U13A):

  • Lost 2-0 vs Ampleforth
  • Lost 2-0 vs Giggleswick

Results (U13B):

  • Won 3-0 vs Ampleforth
  • Won 3-1 vs Giggleswick

Players of the Tournament (U13A): Lola F (II), Betsy B (II), Phoebe S (II)
Players of the Tournament (U13B): Una A (II)

Match Report (U13A):
The U13As had two great matches on Saturday. Although we lost 2-0 in both games, the whole team tried their best and saved a lot of goals. Although the matches were short, we achieved a lot in them. Phoebe did some great hit-outs, and Betsy made some amazing saves in goal. We managed to get the ball up the pitch into the D a few times with good passes into spaces and finding free players, but the opposition’s defense was very strong and hard to get through. Even though no goals were scored, we were proud of ourselves because we worked really well as a team and stayed strong throughout both matches. Looking ahead to our next match, we could improve by making sure there is always someone staying back in the D to ensure our goal is always protected. Everyone played very well on Saturday, and we are looking forward to our future matches and working on improving.
(Report by Lola F & Martha W, II)

Match Report (U13B):
On Saturday, the U13Bs played against Ampleforth and Giggleswick. We won 3-0 against Ampleforth and 3-1 against Giggleswick.

Throughout both matches, there was great communication as well as amazing teamwork. Even though we were missing a goalkeeper for both games, we still managed to defend our goal quite well, with only one goal being scored against us across both matches.

U12A & U12B Teams

Results (U12A):

  • Won 4-0 vs Giggleswick

Results (U12B):

  • Lost 1-0 vs Giggleswick

Players of the Tournament (U12A): Mimi O (I)
Players of the Tournament (U12B): Issy J (I)

Match Report (U12A):
On Saturday, there were endless goals from QM for the U12As, and everyone played really well, putting in 110% effort. Some people went into the match with not much confidence or experience and came out as champions of hockey. Although we didn't get to play Ampleforth, we had fun playing the same team again after the first match, as it gave us the chance to develop experience. Eva, Nattida, and Suzy scored, and Elisa played excellently, even though she had never played hockey, especially not in goal. Overall, everyone played wonderfully and should be proud of themselves and the team. It was an amazing start to the season, and we are all very excited for the matches ahead.
(Report by Elsie D, I)

Match Report (U12B):
It was great to play in the first U12B match of the season against Giggleswick School. Everyone got stuck in and played well. QM had more possession in the first half but weren’t quite able to turn the pressure into a goal. In the second half, it felt more even, but Giggleswick managed to score a goal, leaving the final score at 1-0. We look forward to getting some good practice in over the next few weeks so that we’re ready to play Pocklington on 5th October.
