GCSEs in York

Queen Margaret's Head, Sue Baillie, is immensely proud of her Year V students this morning after their GCSE results success. Mrs Baillie said “Every single QM girl has worked tremendously hard in the classroom and online through the most difficult of times and they thoroughly deserve the excellent grades they’ve achieved. Their results enable our girls to look forward with optimism to the next stage of their studies here in the QM Sixth Form, and then to university and employment.”

The QM pupils have once again secured GCSE results of the highest level; a quarter of all of the school’s GCSE entries were marked at grade 9 and 40% of pupils achieved five or more 9-8 grades. The Year V students demonstrated what a diverse group they are with 100% of Music, History, Further Mathematics, Latin and Mandarin entries all achieving grades 9-6. They also proved their worth in the all-important core subjects, especially the individual Sciences where 98% of all grades were marked 9-6.

Day pupil Freya and Flexi-boarder Zoe, who both achieved a clean sweep of grades 9-7, can’t wait for what’s in store next at QM.

Freya’s passion is Drama - she recently took a leading role in the school’s production of ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ and will go on to study A Levels in Drama and Theatre, Mathematics, Spanish and Biology at QM’s Sixth Form. She told us “I’m so utterly pleased with my results and I am very grateful to all my teachers who have given me so much support over the last few years, especially when we were learning online. I’m incredibly optimistic for my A Levels. Working with all the other girls and teachers at QM is such a privilege and I’m grateful for all the encouragement they have given me so far.”

Zoe, who is a keen musician, will go on to study A Levels in Music, Geography, Chemistry and Biology. Zoe said "I am overjoyed with the results I received this morning and I am very grateful to the teachers that helped me through the courses. I think they have given me a great foundation to build on next year. I am really passionate about all the subjects I will be taking but I have a particular passion for music, QM constantly provides me with amazing opportunities to perform, learn and create new music. The school supported me in getting a place on the Sound and Music Summer Camp last year and in an upcoming composition workshop with Andrea Price. I also perform in the school jazz group, 'The Lost Sock'. I am so grateful for all these opportunities and can't wait to see what the next two years bring."

September will see the Lower Sixth year group almost double in size as QM welcomes a new cohort of students joining its Sixth Form. Both the existing and the new girls can look forward to an enriching two years, where they will have the choice of 30 different courses, can enjoy independent living in preparation for university and will be able to get stuck into an array of exciting extra-curricular activities.

Mrs Baillie concluded “QM girls are resilient, empathetic and ambitious young women and I have no doubt that our Year V girls will continue to flourish”.
