Welcoming girls from over 16 different nations

Overseas Admissions

QM is proud to welcome girls from across the world. Our international students are immersed in a thriving boarding community that values diversity, whilst offering a unique opportunity to gain new skills and develop lifelong friendships.

ISOTY Awards Shortlist

Queen Margaret's School for Girls is shortlisted in the 'International Student Experience' category of the Independent Schools of the Year Awards 2024.

The school’s home is an historic 75 acre country estate; a safe, enclosed environment with outstanding facilities. We are just minutes from the cultural and historic riches of York, one of the UK’s best connected cities - London is less than two hours on the train, whilst the city of Leeds is a taxi ride away - which makes us a perfect choice for families seeking an authentic, British boarding experience for their daughter.

Home from Home

We know that leaving home to come to a new country and a new school is a huge step for girls who are joining QM from overseas. We offer the following initiatives to ensure they settle into their new home from home:

  • Orientation Programme - A week-long Orientation Programme before the new academic year to help overseas students to settle in before term begins.
  • Stay In For Leave Out - An opportunity for all girls to stay in school during Leave Out (Exeat) Weekends with our ‘Stay in for Leave Out’ programme.
  • Short-Stay Immersion Programme - Students cam experience our vibrant school for two - four weeks, dates and durations are flexible.
  • One-Year GCSE Programme - Students joining our One-Year GCSE programme are fully immersed into the academic, cultural and social aspects of life in a British boarding school. Assessed and Unassessed options available.

Academic Results for International Students

What makes QM stand out is the personal level of support offered to every overseas student. On arrival, students are assessed for any additional learning needs, including an additional EAL (English as an Additional Language) assessment for all international students. EAL lessons are included in our non-UK/EEA Full Boarding Fee. Timetables also feature one-on-one meetings every week with a Personal Tutor, who provides support with every facet of living and learning at QM.

As a result, we see excellent examination results achieved, both at A Level and GCSE. With small class sizes and tailored timetables, our teachers maximise every girl's academic potential, resulting in our leavers securing fantastic success at university. University destinations include Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial, LSE, UCL, Durham, Bristol, Stern Business School (USA) and The Royal Drawing School (London) on a diverse range of courses such as Engineering, Art Foundation, Mathematics, History, Music Management, Medicine, Law and Business Management.

Beyond the classroom, our boarding is arranged by year group, which helps the girls to bond and develop lifelong friendships with peers within their age group. Accommodation and facilities are age appropriate, meaning that Year 7 (QM’s Year I) settle into QM life in a homely ‘farmhouse’ environment, whereas Year 13 (QM’s UVI) have a real taste of independent living in cottages with their friends.

Education Guardians

All international boarders are required to have an education guardian appointed by their parents. Queen Margaret’s is not at liberty to recommend guardians to parents, as the appointment of the guardian is the decision of the parent. We do, however, recommend that all education guardians are approved by AEGIS or BSA. View our Education Guardianship policy.
