Songwriter’s Collective

The Songwriter’s Collective at Queen Margaret’s gives girls who write their own material (or aspire to) an outlet for receiving guidance, sharing their songs with others and working on larger performance numbers. The collective aspect allows different combinations of girls to work on different songs to provide varied perspective and allow for original arrangements to happen in a collaborative atmosphere.

In it’s first year, the Collective has achieved a great deal. Whether performing at Assemblies or intimate unplugged gigs in the Chapel, the performances are always popular within the School. Girls have also taken part in song writing workshops at Leeds College of Music, recorded their own CD at the School and at the prestigious Sage in Gateshead and performed at the National Music for Youth festival to outstanding critical praise. They also performed alongside professional musicians at this year’s QM Rocks.

Quite often, girls join the group with no previous writing experience, leading to a rapid development of confidence to write their own songs. Although the group is currently formed from different Year groups, they have developed a strong sense of camaraderie and support for one another. The girls often engage in the opportunity to take on new instruments and develop pragmatic skills in arranging and ‘jamming’ with each other’s projects.
