Science Society

The Science Society at Queen Margaret’s is open to all girls in Years 12 & 13 who are studying a Science at A level. The School regularly welcomes outside speakers who give lectures on a range of Science subjects particularly tailored to topics the girls are currently covering. Typically the speakers hail from regional universities who are undertaking scientific research, or are members of the Royal Society of Chemistry, Society of Biology or Institute of Physics and are carrying out scientific work in industry.

The Michaelmas Term sees the school welcome two speakers during the Michaelmas term and one or two more in the Lent Term. The aim is to bring speakers who speak knowledgeable about a range of topics appealing to students of each A level subject – Physics, Chemistry and Biology – throughout the course of the year. Girls benefit from attending these lectures in a number of ways.

Generally the topics covered have relevance to A level Science topics being studied. The lectures also either give a flavour for how the three subjects are employed in the workplace, or highlight cutting edge research in a particular field. Girls are often inspired for possible work opportunities or career paths while attending these lectures.
