International Council

The aim of the International Council at Queen Margaret’s is to encourage collaboration throughout the School between girls of all nationalities, working together to promote cultural diversity and to look after the interests and welfare of all girls. A busy schedule of multicultural events and projects allows the Council to achieve its aims and also acts as a means of consulting students on their interests and needs.

The Council gives girls from different countries and different year groups the opportunity to serve as student representatives. It is chaired by the Deputy Head Girl in close collaboration with the International Prefect. Their work is supported by the Deputy Head, International Counsellor and Head of EAL. Representatives on the International Council have the opportunity to develop a range of skills. They are encouraged to brainstorm and evaluate ideas, collaborate, lead and manage, present their views and listen to others. Girls also learn how to prepare meeting agendas and take minutes, while developing confidence and communication skills along the way.

The Council meets every few weeks to discuss any matters arising and to plan events throughout the year. This also involves organising girls’ participation in assemblies in order to promote various international issues and to encourage girls to be involved in the Council’s activities. This is often done in collaboration with other student bodies, for example the Charity Council, and gives girls an opportunity to organise and run events. Some examples of past events and celebrations include the International Mocktails Welcome Event, Mid-Autumn Festival, supporting the ‘This Girl Can’ Campaign, International Cookery Classes, El Carnaval , celebrating the International Day of the Girl, and Chinese New Year.
