Cantiamo at Queen Margaret’s is our Years 7 & 8 choir which aims to unite girls by encouraging them to enjoy singing and grow in confidence through performance. Singing is an activity accessible by all and we work to give girls a practical foundation in vocal technique, score reading and a wide experience of repertoire and vocal harmonisation. It serves as an excellent foundation for girls aspiring to join QM’s Chamber Choir through study of sacred works. Additionally, girls benefit from bespoke arrangements of popular songs specifically written to introduce them to part singing.

Weekly rehearsals are held using both sectional and whole choir opportunities, starting with vocal warm-ups and games, often progressing to detailed work on the current repertoire. In the Michaelmas Term, the group is off to a running start with a short concert in the local community performing to primary children. This serves as a springboard to our performance in the Christmas concerts and Carol Service at the end of term. Here, the girls get to partake in joint performances with the senior Chamber Choir. Throughout the course of the Easter Term, we begin extending our repertoire in preparation for concerts in a more public setting.

Alongside regular performances for School Assemblies, House events and services, our recent and upcoming public appearances have included Disneyland Paris, workshops at the Sage, Gateshead and an evensong service at the historic St. George’s, Cullercoats.

All girls in Years 7 & 8 are in Cantiamo and benefit from the experience of making music with their peers. Working towards our performances is a shared experience and our successful performances and trips often create long-lasting memories for the girls.
