U18 Ribbon Lacrosse Tournament

Saturday 18 January

Despite the cold January weather, a warm welcome awaited Fettes, Loretto, HLC and Oakham as they joined us for the inaugural Ribbon Lacrosse Tournament on Saturday. The Friends of Queen Margaret's made this a wonderful community event and there was a lovely flow of spectators throughout the day. A winter BBQ breakfast and lunch were served pitchside, the Friends group were selling Knekki's, sweets, cakes and drinks, and there were local trade stands selling their products as well. There was a great atmosphere.

There were six teams in the tournament and lots of amazing Lacrosse being played, with many goals. Sadly neither of the QM teams were victorious, a replica trophy headed up to Scotland with Fettes who came first. The full trophy will stay at QM to be presented every year and this was very kindly donated by the Blyth family and the Montagu Douglas Scott family - a huge thanks to them for their generosity. If you would like to see the 'Silver Salver' it is on display in the trophy cabinets next to Wenlock Library.

The QM 1st Team started their tournament well but unfortunately could not hold off the other teams in the second half of the tournament. The QM U15 team (made up of Year III and IV players) did exceptionally well against older teams, they held their own and played very well.

Schools' Showjumping Points League

Well done to Emily O and Erin O who both competed in the second event of the Schools' Showjumping Points League at Port Royal at the weekend. Erin rode a lovely double clear in the 65cm on her pony Buck, Emily and Flash were double clear and the winners in both the 90cm and 100cm classes.

Match Reports

Monday 20 January
Netball
QM U12 v Bootham U12
Lost 8-2
POM(s): Izzy J
The U12 netball team played an exciting match against Bootham, showing great determination and development throughout, despite an 8-2 loss. Bootham started strongly, taking control in the early stages of the game with accurate shooting and solid defensive pressure. QM worked hard to adapt, and by the second quarter, they began to find their rhythm, making stronger passes and creating more opportunities in attack. The defensive unit for QM stepped up as the game progressed, making key interceptions and forcing errors from the Bootham attack. In midfield, Izzy J was a standout, driving tirelessly through the court, linking play beautifully, and keeping the team’s momentum alive. Her effort and vision earned her the well-deserved title of Most Valuable Player. The final quarter saw some of QM's best moments, with improved communication and sharper movement. Their persistence paid off with two well-earned goals, demonstrating the team’s determination to finish on a high note.

Tuesday 21 January
Netball
QM Mavericks A v Rawcliffe Raiders
Won 50-20
POM(s): Maisie B
After last week's defeat, QM Mavericks A were looking to bounce back and score with confidence again. On Tuesday evening, they faced Rawcliffe Raiders who have struggled to find their form this season. The A team worked well up and and down the court and came away with a convincing win.

Tuesday 21 January
Netball
QM Mavericks B v Selby Lightning
Won 40-36
POM(s): Ruth
QM Mavericks B hosted Selby Lightning for the final time this season. In the two previous encounters, both teams have had to work hard to win one a piece. This fixture would be a test of nerves and hunger. After three quarters, the B team were trailing by seven goals and Selby looked likely to come out on top. However, the Bs kept their composure, winning key interceptions to seal the win by four.

Wednesday 22 January
Netball
1st VII v HLC
Drew 22-22
POM(s): Eve L-T (voted for by HLC) and Elsa S
"On Wednesday 22nd January the first netball team played Harrogate Ladies College. We started off the match very strong ending the first quarter 10-5. There were some brilliant shots coming from both Poppy and Elsa . As the game went on we developed our play and there was some lovely movement coming down the centre court. At halftime we switched up positions, however Harrogate Ladies College managed to catch up with our score ending the third quarter at 21-21. We then started the final quarter with great optimism and positivity to try win the game however the game was brought to an early end as the opposition had to head home leaving the score as 22-22. It was a great match and it was so nice to have our first team back together again and there was a lot of positives to take away, it was also really encouraging to see the Year V girls step up and play for the first team." Match report by Harriet W.
