Northern Storm v QM Mavericks A
Score: Lost 45-35
POM: Mrs Rastall
A game of two halves as the A team put out a stellar performance after the first two quarters, matching goal for goal against last season's Division 2 winners.
There was some very good play in the attacking circle and amazing intercepts by everyone, especially in the defending circle. But with a late start time and physical contests between players, it was clear the As were beginning to tire which allowed Storm to run ahead in the last quarter. The rematch will most certainly be another tense one.
U14 Tier 1&2 National Schools County Round
Score: 1-0 Loss (Queen Marys), 0-0 Draw (Ampleforth), 1-0 Loss (Giggleswick)
POM: Sautu (III), Bobble (II), Izzy (III), Heidi (III)
The U14s got a surprise when they found out they were through to the next round of their National League competition but took on this challenge well. With some very close results, the team improved massively since their last trip to Queen Mary's and their last face-off against Ampleforth College.
With some changes in positions, the girls adapted well and represented their school well but just could not put the ball in the net, unfortunately. A great experience for all.
Friday 6th October
U13 2nd Round ISHC vs Withington Girls' School
Score: 1-0 Win
POM: Polly (II) & Bobble (II)
The squad were lucky to have a home fixture as the next round of their Cup competition. The game started off nicely and Queen Margaret's managed to get an early goal from some fantastic play which Maddie (II) placed in the back of the net after a lovely assist from Bobble (II). The team worked hard throughout the pitch with the defence feeding nicely through to the forwards, led by Louise (II) who kept a calm head and looked after her team by finding passes even in the most stressful situations.
Emilia (II) put her life on the line to stop some short corner shots and Annabel (II) made some cracking tackles to help keep Withington out. Heidi (II) worked hard through the whole game to support the attack and won many short corners from her crafty play (II). India (II) supported this as well with a star performance from Polly (II) winning her Coach's Player of the Match. Amelia (II) stepped up to the plate to support us when we were suffering from injuries in the second half and helped to protect her goalkeeper Evie (II) from some wild shots in the second half.
The girls should be commended for their bravery and determination in what was a heated and highly competitive match - they were a credit to their team, their year group and their school and did fantastically well to keep calm and to continue to play in tough playing conditions. Well done to all and good luck in the next round.
Saturday 7th October
U18 North Schools Lacrosse Tournament
POM: Issy B (IV) and Eve LT (LVI)
Player's Player: Sophie S
Most improved: Lilly Rose W and Lucy C
On Saturday 7th October, QM hosted the U18 North schools lacrosse tournament with some high-level lacrosse being played across the 1st and 2nd team pitches.
QM had a tough first couple of games but kept fighting and showing grit and determination. After a short break, the team came back strong getting a win under their belt against HLC. The team then started to gel with defence being strong against some tough sides going forward.
The midfield transitioned the ball well and there were great goals from a number of players and, for some, their first senior goal. A very young team made up of year IV - UVI: it's exciting to look ahead to the season for hopeful progress to be made.
Monday 9th October
QM Mavericks B v Sherburn Flyers
Score: Lost 40-33
POM: Miss Cheng
Umpire's POM: Amanda (V)
A slow start for Mavericks B as they went down 14-5 after the first quarter. With a few switch-ups of positions, we came back to close the gap. Looks to be a running theme for the Bs - if we had more time, we'd get the win! All in all, a decent effort by all.
U15 Area Hockey Tournament
Score: 2-0 W vs Manor School, 1-1 D vs Tadcaster
POM: Olympe E (IV) (x2), Celia S (IV) & Isabel B (IV)
For a nice trip out on a Monday afternoon, the U15s headed to Manor School for the annual Area Tournament involving schools from the York area. After winning the last 2 years, the QM players were feeling confident!
They took on Manor School first, and a cracking goalkeeper helped keep Queen Margaret's at bay, but the girls kept getting chance after chance resulting in 2 very well-executed goals from our midfielders. This left the final result at 2-0 for QM starting off the tournament well.
Next, the girls were straight on to tackle Tadcaster. They fought and fought but again a strong keeper made it difficult to execute any shots we tried. The determination and resilience from the girls paid off however, with Isabel B (IV) sneaking in a lovely deflection on the post giving us a 1-0 lead. Tadcaster had a fantastic counter attack however, which saw them put in an equalizer pretty much straight away. Unfortunately, there wasn't enough time left for QM to get the winner. A lovely afternoon of hockey was had by all!
Wednesday 11th October
U18 County Round National League Hockey Competition
Position: 3rd place
POM: Harriette P (UVI)
Wednesday saw a competitive tournament being hosted at Queen Margaret's for the County Round of the U18s National League competition. It was a very close tournament with some fantastic performances by the squads and some really close results.
Ampleforth (1-0 Loss, POM Harriette), Ripon Grammar (0-0 Draw, POM Harriet), St Aidan's (0-0 Draw, POM Daisy) and Ashville (2-0 W, POM Celia) all attended, allowing for a nice competitive atmosphere.
Queen Margaret's played some fantastic hockey again, using each other really well and putting in some great team performances. They found themselves with many chances leading to some great goals and some other great attempts on goal as well. Unfortunately, the girls came 3rd overall, very close to 2nd place, which means they didn't progress through to the next stage but a great performance was put in by the entire squad.
U13 In2Hockey Tournament
Position: 3rd place
POM: Amelia W (II) & Maddie B (II)
Thursday saw the U13s hosting the first round of their league competition as well, on a lovely sunny day.
St Peter's (6-1 Loss, POM Heidi), Scarborough College (6-0 Win, POM Louise), Ripon Grammar (5-0 Win, POM Maddie) and Ampleforth (1-0 Loss, POM Amelia) all attended with some quality hockey being played.
Queen Margaret's managed to come 3rd again with some great performances and some cracking goals including a few really well-executed short corners. A great afternoon of hockey - well done to all
Thursday 12th October
QM Mavericks A v Royak Fe-mails 1st
Score: Lost 55-25
POM: Maisie (V)
With only 6 players, Mavericks A knew it was going to be a very tough game against Royal Fe-mails who have been in Division 1 for many years. Since we decided to drop the WD position, Harriet (LVI), Miss McGain, Maisie (V) and Lucy (UVI) rotated the GK, GD, C and WA positions between them.
Having Jen (UVI) at GA helped with the high ball passing in the centre third, making up for the missing WD position. It was a great team effort - both the opposition and umpires commented that it did look like we were a player down. Well done Mavs!
