Transgender Awareness Week
Transgender Awareness Week 2021
Published 19th November 2021
This week is Transgender Awareness Week (TAW). It forms part of a wider campaign, Trans Awareness Month, and is an important opportunity to show support to the trans community.
Today, Queen Margaret's Pride Club offered an open invitation to staff and students to explore trans identities and consider how awareness can be turned into action. The group discussed how being anti-transphobic can be a better attitude, as opposed to simply being not transphobic in a passive way.
QM's Year Group Assemblies also started the week by bringing Transgender Awareness Week into focus.
Transgender Awareness Week takes place each year from 13th - 19th November. It coincides with the Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR) on 20th November - an annual day of observance for the memory of transgender people who have lost their lives due to anti-transgender violence.
The aim of TAW is to raise the visibility of transgender people and address the issues that members of the community face. With organisations taking part around the country, this is achieved through wider education, stories from the community, and encouraging action to progress advocacy around the issues of prejudice, discrimination, and violence.
