Drama Trip July 2023
The 39 Steps
Published 7th July 2023
This week was another fantastic evening for our GCSE & A Level Drama girls. Here is a write-up from Lilly Rose (Year IV)...
"After Spending the day in by the seaside in Scarborough, the IV Drama GCSE and LVI Drama A-Level students met up to go see 'The 39 Steps' directed by Paul Robinson, Artistic Director of the Stephen Joseph Theatre.
After meeting with the Drama staff, we took a leisurely walk into Scarborough town centre. After a busy day on the beach, we were all famished and were looking forward to supper which we enjoyed together at Florio’s Pizzeria, enjoying a range of pizza and pastas between us. The banana splits we enjoyed afterwards were definitely something to be thankful for!
After being fed and watered, we made the short trek over to the theatre, basking in each other's company along the way. After having many pictures taken (somewhat begrudgingly) and teaching Mrs Griffin the correct way to take a selfie, we arrived at the theatre with time left to take a peak in the SJT shop which featured all locally made products.
At 19:30 we took our seats in The Round, and the play began. A wonderful mix of slap-stick humour and murder mystery, the play follows Richard Hannay, a 37-year-old bachelor, who becomes caught up in preventing an organisation of spies ”The 39 Steps” from stealing British Military secrets. Mistakenly accused of the murder of a spy he met at the theatre, Hannay must work to clear his name. My favourite parts of the performance included the actors' Scottish dancing over an invisible cat, an audience member attempting to join the show, and an actor slightly breaking character when his wig flew off. "I've danced the hair right off my head!"
All in all, we had a wonderful evening and are so grateful for the opportunity. A big thank you goes out to Mrs Griffin, Mrs Priestley and Mr Schneider for organising the trip and getting us home safely! We all thoroughly enjoyed the chance to spend time together over a delicious meal and a hilarious show and can't wait to do it again soon."
