The week in sport

Sports Review

Published Friday 27th January 2023

In this week's Sports Review, read the latest from the Mavericks A and B teams, plus the U18 tennis v Wakefield Girls with a victory securing a place in the next round of the Year 11-13 LTA Youth Schools tennis competition.

Tuesday 24th January

NETBALL: Mavericks A vs Easingwold

Score: Won 30-13

Player of the Match: Miss Kirkup

From the get-go, Mavericks A seemed out of sorts with indecisive movement and passing. Fortunately, the defence was there to stop the opposition in the circle and provide valuable support in the attacking phase. Despite a scrappy performance, the A team managed a conservative win.

Wednesday 25th January

NETBALL: Mavericks B v Bishop Wilton Firebirds

Score: Lost

With a new player in the lineup, Mavericks B was finally showing signs of being a united team, playing with tenacity in attack and defence.

At half time, the B team was 9-19 down, holding their nerve against one of the top teams in their division. However, the opposition stepped up a gear after a couple of changes, eventually beating Mavericks with a mighty win.

A decent performance by the Bs will give them confidence in their remaining fixtures.

U18 Tennis v Wakefield Girls High school

Player of the Match: Florence Forbes

The tennis fixture in the Year 11-13 LTA Youth School's Tennis competition was cancelled last week because of the snow and ice.

This week, the weather was rainy and the team competed in wet conditions. Well played Lauren, Bonnie, Flossie and Olivia on achieving a 4-2 victory which means they are through to the next round.
