National Schools Lacrosse 2024

Mrs Kilburn told us all about this week's 2024 National Schools Lacrosse Tournament...

National Schools Lacrosse is the highlight of a senior lacrosse player's sporting diary. This huge event took place at Aldershot Garrison this year. QM entered the U19A tournament along with 59 other schools.

Day One

Day one of the tournament is the ranking day, where groups are created based on last year's ranking and teams play for a place in 3 different divisions. QM was in a tough group and from last year was listed as the 6th school.

The first game was against Caterham. We started strong with a very young team, consisting of 2 UVI girls, 5 LVI, 2 Year Vs, and 7 Year IVs. We managed to prevent Caterham, the 1st ranked team, from scoring many in the first half and our team showed grit, determination, and teamwork. The final score was a loss, but one we were proud of as the game player was great.

The next game was against the team listed just above us. We started strong and scored first; the confidence spread amongst the team and the final score was a win 4 - 2.

The next games we knew would be tough against Claremont Fan, St Swithun's, and St George's, Harpenden. QM 1st team played well but the opposition was good and, despite the fight, all 3 games were losses.

We were going into day 2 already having played better than the previous year and in 5th position in the group meaning we were in Division 2.

Day Two

Our first 3 games of the day in our pool were to determine who we would play in the final 16 knockout rounds. Good wins against Abbot's Hill (6-1) and King's, Canterbury (3 - 1), followed by a close loss against North London Collegiate (1-2) put us in 2nd place in our pool which meant we met Tutor Hall in the first knockout stage.

A tense game with Tutor scoring first and QM having lots of possession but unable to capitalize until 4 minutes before the end of the game QM made it a draw, and just 2 minutes later we scored again, bringing the final score to 2 - 1 to QM and putting us through to the quarterfinals; we would be facing St George's, Ascot.

This game was a 2-2 draw at the end of normal time, which meant it went to extra time 3 minutes each way with a golden goal. It was end-to-end for the first 3 minutes, and just into the second half of extra time, QM managed to put the ball into the back of the net meaning we were through to the semi-finals.

The Semi Final

The semi-final was a tough game against Stowe. QM went down but never stopped working and brought back a few goals, but with this coming too late there was not long of the 16-minute game left.

Getting to the semi-finals and showing such great teamwork throughout the tournament was incredible.

Well done!

The whole team should be so proud of their achievement and, with only 2 UVI girls leaving, we are excited for next year with a very similar team. A huge thank you to all our spectators. I know we all appreciated knowing we had so many people rooting for QM.

Reports

Monday 11th March 2024

Fixture: U13 Netball Tournament

Score: 7-1 L vs Fulford / 7-1 W vs Joseph Rowntree / 10-1 W vs Manor / 10-1 L vs St Peter's / 5-2 L vs Tadcaster / 6-1 W Archbishop Holgates

POM: Bobble P

Report:
U13s had a great afternoon out at Joseph Rowntree taking part in the York and District Netball tournament on Monday. With some tough competition, the girls tried hard to put pressure on their opposition, resulting in several wins across the competition. Unfortunately, this wasn't enough to secure a playoff position, but it was a great learning experience all the same. A very enjoyable afternoon with some great netball on display and a big well done to the team.

Fixture: Abedare Cup - Tennis U18 National Championships

Score: Won 5-1

POM: The team!

Report:
The Abedare Cup U18 National Championships were played on Monday at home v Ryedale. This competition saw all players competing in the best of three sets, so the team of Elsa (LVI), Olivia (LVI), Florence (UVI and Captain), Tilly (LVI) took to the courts to play singles.

Excellent play on all courts meant we were 3-1 up after the singles with the doubles to play. Then to the doubles, where we won both matches giving us a 5-1 win and a place in the next round of the competition. Well done to all our players and especially to the students who had played in the National Lacrosse Tournament and showed their true grit - running around the tennis court for over 3 hours.

Fixture: U13 Hockey vs Joseph Rowntree and Tadcaster Grammar

Score: 4-0 W vs Joseph Rowntree and 4-0 W vs Tadcaster Grammar

POM: Louise B & Polly W

Report:
The U13s were not done yet and were on the road to Huntington to take place in the York and District Hockey tournament. In their first 11-a-side match, the team took it in their stride and worked well to move the ball around the pitch at a good speed. This resulted in some cracking goals and some lovely play, with two well-deserved wins. Well done to the squad and the players of the match.

Fixture: QM Mavericks A v RI Breeze

Score: L 35-32

POM: Mavs A team

Report:
Tuesday saw QM Mavericks A's penultimate game against RI Breeze. When both teams met in the first half of the season, the A team won by one goal - this fixture was sure to be another tight contest!

For the first two quarters, both teams kept possession, scoring on their centres. The A team managed a sneaky turnover in the third quarter, pulling ahead by two goals. But against a very physical team and some questionable umpiring decisions, RI just went ahead in the fourth to secure the win. Amazing play and resilience Mavs A!

Wednesday 13th March 2024

Fixture: QM Mavericks B v Selby Storm

Score: Lost

POM: Tilly

Report:
In the last game of the season, QM Mavericks B faced local rivals and division leaders, Selby Storm. Despite playing well and keeping possession, the aptly named Storm proved too mighty for the B team to overcome. Still a good effort Mavs B!

Upcoming Lacrosse for our girls outside of school

Elsa (LVI) is attending the Scotland U20 World Championship Squad training weekend in Edinburgh. This will be the final training before the Home Internationals in April, in which she has been selected to represent Scotland U20.

Congratulations also to Celia, who has been selected to play for Scotland in a festival the same weekend.

On Sunday 17th March, five QM Students will be part of the North Lacrosse teams playing at the Super Counties Tournament at Moreton Hall. This is the most QM girls who have been selected to represent the North in quite a few years, they should be proud of their achievement!

Good Luck to Olivia (LVI) who will play for the U18B North Team, as well as Isabel B (IV), Isabel R (IV), Celia (IV), and Izzy A (III) who will all play for the U15B team.
