Qm-Hall

What’s it like being a part of QM Hall?

Membership of a vertical house in a school where girls board horizontally ( in year groups) is fundamental to the social and cultural life of the school as it is an activity in which girls are guaranteed to meet with, socialise and cooperate with girls from all other year groups. Sporting, cultural, self-improvement, fund raising and just plain fun-filled activities take place on a regular basis, sometimes in house and often in good natured competition with the other five houses. Additionally, membership of QM Hall means that a girl has defeated odds of 5-1 to find herself in the friendliest house and therefore the best house!

What sort of activities and events do girls experience as part of QM Hall?

Essentially, house activities take place during term time on two Friday evenings out of three (the third Friday evening is normally a Leave Out or a holiday). All girls have the opportunity to contribute to and join in these activities – indeed, attendance is compulsory – and therefore to socialise with girls of different ages, often collaborating on sporting, charity or artistic endeavours. As well as QM’s traditional competitions established down the years like Fun Song, Soft Song, Drama Day and Sports Day, girls have had every opportunity to contribute to major house-based fund raising charity fashion shows like ‘Revive’ and ‘Jambo’ as well as the fun games carousel and the newly initiated Fine Art competition. There really is something for everyone in the house system and if girls want to introduce something new, they only have to say so.

Why should girls be part of QM Hall?

See the entries above initially and then consider that the running of the houses is the only purely girl run activity in the School and therefore what a great opportunity this is. All houses have a Head of House, who is a member of staff, and all staff are attached to one house or another, but all house activities are led and driven by the girls; the Head of House (principally) and other staff, act in an advisory capacity. Here the girls can democratically take control of the means of production and this offers great opportunities at every level. If the function of good leadership is to create more leaders, the vertical house system is an excellent way of doing so.

    Soft Song 2017

Soft Song is the antithesis of Fun Song. Of course, that is not to say that it isn’t fun, rather that the criteria of the competition are about the quality of singing and communication. There is not a year that goes by where the girls do not exceed my expectations (to quote a well-loved School
