GCSE Poets go LIVE

Poets attend conference with Poet Laureate, John Agard, Simon Armitage, and more…

Girls from Year V had the opportunity attend Poetry Live! an event held at Leeds Town Hall and featuring some of the UK’s most renowned poets, including Poet Laureate Carol Anne Duffy. Lucy and Honor give their take on the day below:

Poetry is sexy. Or so we were told by none other than John Agard, who, after blasting us with some of his most famous poems, instructed us to have a nice life as we left Leeds Town Hall, having had a great day out hearing poems from various wonderful (and at times mad) poets.

The day kicked off with ‘Singh Song’s Daljit Nagra talking about where he found his inspiration to write. He stated that poetry was his way of interpreting the world. This was obviously true for our next speaker, Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy, whose view was that ‘Sonnets are the Little Black Dress of poetry’.

Simon Armitage was also a highlight, with his radical views and poems. Poet Gillian Clarke touched on her own personal experiences as a child, reading us her poem ‘Cold Knap Lake’ about her mother saving a child from a lake in Wales.

Amongst all of this literature, we were given some exam technique advice by Chief Examiner Tony Childs, which was both helpful and insightful.

Many thanks to the English Department for organising this trip!
