Junior Science Challenge
It was a spellbinding day for pupils from eight schools who visited QM for our Harry Potter themed Junior Science Challenge. St Olave’s, Westville House, Terrington Hall, Bubwith Community Primary, Belmont Grosvenor, Archbishop of York Junior, Mowden Hall and Brackenfield Schools all brought teams to compete in our fun annual event. The teams were tasked with a series of challenges such as ‘Potion School’ in the laboratory where they had to make a philosopher’s stone and ‘Snape’s slime’. In the afternoon the pupils were mesmerised by Dr Moody and Mrs Thomas’ head-to-head Chemistry v Physics competition in the Theatre. The pair showed off a series of experiments entitled ‘Ice and Fire’, one of which involved making ice cream in a matter of seconds using liquid nitrogen, much to the delight of the audience who were more than happy to sample the results!
At the end of an action-packed day, the ‘Mars Monkeys’ team from St Olave’s were crowned the overall winners.
As well as being a great deal of fun, the Junior Science Challenge has the important purpose of getting young students involved in STEM subjects at an early age. The activities arranged by the QM Science Department certainly captured our visitors’ attention, a big thanks to everyone involved for such an engaging day.
