Health and Wellbeing

As a Girls on Board school dedicated to the health and wellbeing of our students, QM has a Health and Wellbeing Centre onsite which is staffed by a team of registered nurses.

Healthy relationships, a balanced diet, regular exercise, and increased awareness of mental health and wellbeing are both encouraged and delivered through a series of PSHE lessons which are carefully planned and sequenced to ensure to maximise learning and understanding of complex themes. These themes are often revisited as student move through to school to allow for appropriate discussion with emerging maturity. This model enables students to ensure they are healthy and happy during their time at QM.

Health and Wellbeing Centre

QM's Health and Wellbeing Centre is a well-equipped department with a waiting room, 2x treatment rooms, a well-stocked dispensary, lounge, counselling room, four single bedrooms, and shower, bath, and toilet facilities. The centre is staffed by three Registered Nurses who offer a comprehensive school nursing service.

Opening Hours

The Health and Wellbeing Centre operates by appointment where possible, which can be made via phone or email. From Monday to Friday, the Centre is open and staffed from 08:00-20:00. Monday to Sunday morning overnight (20:00-08:00) is covered by one of the three nurses on an on-call basis, an on-call nurse is available via telephone on Sundays and all Housemistresses are first-aid qualified.

In addition, the School Medical Officer holds surgeries via telephone consultation on Monday and Wednesday mornings for Full Boarders and Flexi Boarders who are registered with Elvington Medical Practice. The School Medical Officer, along with their colleagues, will also see students by appointment at Elvington Medical Practice. The Emotional Wellbeing Practitioner (Counsellor) is available for confidential advice.

When a girl becomes unwell

Day girls who become unwell whilst at school can be admitted to the Health and Wellbeing Centre, and if they are staying in school that evening/night, they can be cared for by Housemistresses who are all first-aid qualified.

If the girl is too unwell for lessons, we encourage Flexi and Weekly boarders to return home to be cared for by their family where possible. Full Boarders are able to be cared for at QM.

Unwell boarders from Years I-V do not generally stay in house during the day and must go to the Health and Wellbeing Centre where a joint decision with the Housemistresses will be made about where the girl is to stay. Unwell Sixth Form girls can stay in their rooms during the day, but this must be discussed with the nursing team to ensure there are guidelines in place for regular monitoring.

Personal Tutor

Each girl has a Personal Tutor. In addition to the support from teachers and house staff, every girl meets her Tutor each week. This member of staff oversees her academic progress and wellbeing, monitors her workload, and ensures she is cared for and is reaching her targets.

Tutors also provide advice and discuss enrichment activities to ensure each girl is making the most of all the opportunities on offer.

Five Steps to Positive Wellbeing

Throughout the first lockdown, QM launched the #fivewaystopositivewellbeing initiative. This is part of a national strategy that is supported by many mental health charities.

During an extremely difficult period, it provided tutors with the structure and guidance to have discussions with their tutees about keeping mentally healthy and strong during the lockdown.

QM is proud to be a Girls on Board School

We want to reduce any potential friendship issues by empowering girls with the skills to develop and maintain their own friendships. We encourage girls to settle their own disputes and be happy and confident in their own skin.

I've really enjoyed the PSHE 'drop down' days as we get to hear from different external speakers about a range of really interesting and relevant topics.
