Aims & Philosophy of the Sport Department

The Sport department at QM aims to create an environment which is both inclusive and provides a positive outlet for all ages and abilities. Girls have the opportunity to exceed their own expectations through creative learning given by an outstanding dedicated team of teachers and coaches, many of whom have played and coached at an elite level.

Team and Individual sports are an important aspect for all girls, and offer each the opportunity to try out a variety to find those she enjoys most. The department offers over 20 sports and activities which encourage girls to develop confidence, achieve success, work within a team and build an all-round healthy lifestyle.

Girls compete in all National School events in both winter and summer sports. The department encourages full participation, ensuring each girl is healthy, physically fit and can confidently enjoy taking part in sport. We pride ourselves on ensuring every girl finds a sport or activity that she enjoys.

Overview of Key Stage 5 Curriculum

In the Sixth Form, girls are expected to fully engage in a full and varied programme of Sport but are able to decide which to pursue.  We pride ourselves on offering a varied programme of both competitive sport and recreational activities, while teaching the girls to fully appreciate an active lifestyle.  Our Head of Fitness & Exercise promotes a varied approach to fitness.

For those girls who want to continue competitive sport, we offer in hockey, lacrosse and netball teams composed of 1st, 2nd and 3rd  in each sport. We also compete at badminton, squash, tennis, rounders, horse riding, athletics and swimming.  At our annual Senior Sports Dinner, we acknowledge well over a hundred senior girls who have represented the School during the year.  We are aware that not all girls wish to play competitive sport and are very determined to offer physical activities that everyone will enjoy.

All girls are expected to take part in three hours of sport, which could include aerobics, circuits, dance funk, pilates, canoeing, basketball, volleyball, running, table tennis, shooting or fencing.

What makes the department unique from those at other schools?

Sport at QM is a big part of school life and allows the girls many varied opportunities to gain both skills and confidence. If girls show particular talent, there are opportunities to gain a Sport Scholarship. These can be awarded at any time to both external and internal candidates. Those awarded receive a mentor within the department who is able to support them in their endeavours. They also have strength and conditioning sessions with a trained professional who offers one-to-one personal fitness sessions.

The department enjoys excellent links with local clubs and organisations which offer girls of outstanding talents in Athletic disciplines the opportunity to train at the York Athletics track. Other club memberships our girls enjoy include York Hockey Club and North Yorkshire Hockey among others.

In 2012 the department started a Netball club with two teams that play in the York and District Ladies League, QM run and coach Yorkshire Lacrosse and many of our girls play in the U15s and U19 squads. British Pentathlon and QM have an excellent partnership and we are the home of Yorkshire British Pentathlon, giving many of our girls the opportunity to compete in both biathlon and triathlon events. QM also offers Individual or small group sessions can be arranged for activities such as personal training, dance, tennis and squash.

We also have inter-House competitions in all sports, from the traditional to the unusual, and each girl will take an active part in this. QM sport is progressive as well as upholding tradition; we offer badminton, fencing, shooting, water polo, biathlon and triathlon, horse riding, squash, basketball, football, bench ball, and QM’s own pool lacrosse and pool rounders.
