Aims & Philosophy of the Computer Science Department

The Computer Science Department at Queen Margaret’s aims to develop the girls’ knowledge of how computer systems work and how computational thinking can help us solve problems, design systems and understand the power and limits of human and machine intelligence.

Overview of Key Stage 3 Curriculum

Computer Science is taught in Years I – III and all girls are taught for one hour per week. The course is a mixture of theory and practical work and includes web design, programming in Python, and using BBC Microbits. Many of the projects and activities involve Raspberry Pi Computers.

What makes the department unique from those at other schools?

The Computer Science department at QM offers girls the opportunity to get involved with some high profile extracurricular activities. Previous projects have included building a robot for the Piwars competition and sending a Raspberry Pi powered helium balloon to the stratosphere.
