Horse Riding

Queen Margaret’s has a rich and successful history of being home to some of England’s most accomplished young equestrians. In 2012, Old Margaretian Bella Innes-Ker clenched the U18 National Eventing Champion title while in her first year of Sixth Form. In 2013 the title was transferred to OM Sophie Beaty just weeks before she completed her studies at Queen Margaret’s. More recently, UVI student Rosa Onslow was selected to join the Horse Scotland Performance Squad, whilst Constance Warde-Aldam (LVI) was selected to represent GB at the FEI European Championships for Ponies in Denmark.

Our riders are actively engaged in the eventing circuit, attending competitions throughout the country. QM actively encourages these pursuits and provides the support needed for girls to balance their studies with an active calendar of equestrian opportunities.

The School also sponsors a number of classes at various trials. Most recently, QM could be found at both the Belsay and Aske Horse Trials.

We also offer riding lessons catering to all levels through the Queen Margaret’s Riding School, situated in a quiet, spacious location beyond Red House, the Year I boarding house. The stables accommodate 25 horses and ponies and provides lessons ranging from beginners to Pony Club B test level. Girls are able to bring their own horses and livery is available. Lessons focus on dressage, show jumping, cross country and gymkhana skills, with hacking taking place at the nearby Escrick Park Estate. Groups are small and beginners can be taught individually until confident enough to join a group.

Competitions are held during the year and riding ponies are available for the girls who ride at School.  The emphasis is on sportsmanship and fun, but they provide an opportunity to practise skills learnt in lessons and to become familiar with the relevant rules and traditions.

Riding lessons are available to QM girls either once or twice per week; class lessons or hacks in groups of up to six last 60 minutes. Private or semi-private lessons are available to girls in Year IV and above and last 30 or 40 minutes

Queen Margaret’s offers both the facilities and training for all the components of the Modern Pentathlon. Girls looking to compete in this event can receive tuition in fencing, swimming, show jumping, shooting and running. For more information, please contact Jill Rastall, Head of Pentathlon at
