Hip-Hop Dance

Hip-Hop is an exciting Enrichment activity at Queen Margaret’s, offering girls the opportunity to learn about this urban street form developed from Modern dance; it has a style of its own using extreme body isolations and short sharp movements to be expressive. It is often danced in large groups each dancer creating the same moves to emphasis power. It is performed to contemporary music of the Hip-Hop style with a strong beat and the girls have lots of fun working together on the routines created.

The dancing year is very busy and varied; examinations typically take place in November and June. Meanwhile, the annual Dance Show is held in the Chapman Theatre in March and special performances take place on Speech Day to celebrate the end of the School year. The department regularly contributes to School events, drama productions, charity fundraising and Intra-house entertainment events. The girls benefit from attending regular theatrical events and from professional dance groups visiting School to give workshops in a variety of dance styles.

Dance also enriches physically, mentally and emotionally. It increases coordination, spatial awareness and musicality while also building confidence through delivering solo performances or learning how to dance as a duo or part of a larger group. Girls who dance gain an artistic awareness of existing dance work alongside the opportunity to see new cutting edge pieces by the leading companies of the day. The physical training, discipline and aesthetic awareness gained helps girls explore their own creativity with opportunities to choreography and have their own pieces performed in a theatrical setting.
